Default AFM disabler 2016 Suburban

Hi, I have a 2016 Suburban and was reading about disabling the AFM. This product seems to be well received:
https://www.rangetechnology.com/products/afm-dfm_disabler/

Is it really as easy as putting this into the OBD slot without any other changes to the vehicle?

What kind of things can go wrong using a product like this if left in the vehicle 24/7?

I have over 100k miles and as I am starting to uncover and fix small issues, was thinking maybe this is something I should look into as “preventive” care for the engine.

Is this the best product to use for disabling the AFM?

Trying to weigh the benefits vs potential problems using/not using a device like this to disable AFM in my Suburban.

Thanks for any info here.

We now have (since November 2022) a 2014 Yukon XL Denali with 6.2 liter engine with AFM. Our local ASE mechanic hasn't yet seen this vehicle, but I will ask him next time I see him and go with his opinion.

It appears from my reading that the vehicles maybe 2020-2022 range are the ones that have the real AFM issues. Someone can update if my year range for those issues is incorrect.

To the best of my knowledge, AFM has been a problem since it's inception in 2007.

I think my 2005 Yukon XL Denali had this; if so, never had any issues (sold at 240K).

It was just in recent years that the smaller GM problem with AFM became a MUCH GREATER AFM problem. Search this forum, you see lots of folks with new SUVs and trucks having early issues with this, and dealers pretending they never heard of this.

The Range device is too hacky. It's probably better to get a professional tune.

Ive had the AFM disabler from Range for about 10 years I think. It does what its supposed to do. But one downfall Ive encountered is if you dont drive the vehicle often the device can drain the battery. But if you drive the car just about everyday it will be fine.

Yes it is just as simple as plugging it into the obd2 port.

I believe if you know someone with a tech2 scanner like they have at the dealer, the AFM can be turned off via the scanner so no need to have any external devices. Also other tuning software can turn off the AFM as well.

Also if you have emission inspection, don’t remove the device while the engine is running, it’ll will erase all the pertinent information the emission scanner is looking for. Then the inspector will say you need to drive the car around for a while so that the new data will get populated.

Are you having any engine oil burning issues?

Good luck!

tech2 is obsolete. It's going to need an MDI-2 interface with GDS-2 software, HPTuners, or something like that.
I heard the range device kills coast/decel fuel shutoff too.
