That was because the A/C system that cools the refrigerant down with the condenser, and heats up your radiator when the A/C is operational.

Can you replace the thermostat with the water pump in place? If so, maybe try that first.

I looked at gm thermostat and the one that's one here now and it's a big difference. The one I got in here now was holes at the bottom of thermostat and the gm don't and the top is way different than gm. Gm has a cone top and the other has a bubble type top

Can you post pictures of these? Might help us. Typically any weep hole in the thermostat faces up.

Check the thermostat and see if it is fully closed when it's cold. It doesn't have to be open very far for the engine not to heat up in the winter time.
