That was because the A/C system that cools the refrigerant down with the condenser, and heats up your radiator when the A/C is operational.

Can you post pictures of these? Might help us. Typically any weep hole in the thermostat faces up.

Check the thermostat and see if it is fully closed when it's cold. It doesn't have to be open very far for the engine not to heat up in the winter time.
