They confirmed they had replaced many and just needed to look at them to order the right parts.

After a quick look, they ordered parts, and the GM service center, or whatever they are called, followed up with me a few times. Not only did they replace the two doors that were broke (front right, and rear left), but also the driver's door which was still working. The dealer said they replaced that one because it is the one that always goes out eventually.

Total cost: $0. So, I am VERY happy with the resolution of this problem. Of course, this is a local dealership in a small, Rocky Mountain town that my family has been doing business with for 30 years. This Suburban wasn't bought there though.

That is great news! Unfortunely, I spent and hour on the phone with Chevy "Customer Relations" and it left me with the feeling that after a lifetime of Chevy's will never buy a Chevy again. For the 5th time I have had a door lock go out. 3 have already been paid out of pocket. I have finally had enough so I contacted Chevy directly. All I was offered was, the dealer will look at it and it is possible Chevy will pay a portion of it however, not gurantee even if the problem is what I say it is.

The issue is the dealer charges $99 for the inspection. That is not charged if the work is done there. However, the estimate for repairs is $300+. So, I have a choice, take it to the dealer and take a $300 bet Chevy may step up to the plate and fix a known problem or go to my local mechanic who will charge less.

The kicker is the dealer is advising the part is $190 though the local mechanic bought the part previously from the same dealer for $140. So, the dealer charges itself $50 more for a part.

Clearly Chevy knows there is an issue with thier door locks and are not willing to step up to the plate. This should have been a recall long ago and would have saved me from replacing 3 actuators out of my own pocket.

I had 3/4 door locks on my $55,000 Tahoe go out and I'll be damned if I ever have to pay for any. I'll scream, yell, post, picket, and do whatever I have to to ensure they last my lifetime.

With the insane failure rate we need a class action or NTHSB recall or similar...

It's one thing to have one lock fail at 100,000 miles, it's another to have 3/4 fail within 2 years.

I know it has been a few months since anyone has posted on here but I feel compelled to share my experience. We purchased a new 2008 Suburban in late '08. No joke, around the 38,000 mile mark one door lock quit working. This was about 15 months into ownership. Took it to my local dealer and was informed it was out of warranty and would be $280 to fix. After researching I found numerous other people were experiencing the same problems although a lot of them were still under their warranty period. I decided to wait it out and see if a service bulletin would be issued (since recalls are not issued by manufacturers). We have 4 kids the youngest of which was an infant at the time so imagine the inconvenience of having 2 more door locks go out in the course of the next 2 years. The only that works is the back passenger side. I have waited without any word ever coming from GM that they will solve this issue, they actually won't even acknowledge that there is a problem!!!! I spoke with GM customer service and when I asked if they had ever googled door lock issues was told that the Internet was not a reliable source of information because "anyone can put anything on there"?!?!?! Seriously, we made it all up???????? GM offered me 10% of the replacement of all 4 actuators. Whoa! Big money! This is not my first Suburban, my husband has purchased several GM trucks over the years, so basically we have spent (this is a conservative guess) $140,000 on GM products and they are wiling to pay $90.00. Thanks, but no thanks. I will take my business elsewhere including my dream since being a little girl of having a new corvette. We will be researching Porsches thank you very much. I will in the meantime be very persuasive to all my friends and family about my issues with GM. I actually swayed a friend just this past Friday from purchasing a new Suburban and she will now be looking into a Honda Pilot. GM, I don't think bailout money will help you this time. Whatever happened to "the customer is always right"??

I’m sorry you are experiencing this issue with your vehicle. Were you provided a case number? If so, would you please PM me the number so I can look into this further. If you do not have the case number available, please PM me the VIN, so I may proceed.

I look forward to your reply.

If your friend was really interested in a Suburban, she'll not be happy w/ a Pilot as it's a lot smaller. Probably should look at an extended Ford Expedition.

Chevrolet Customer Service and follow forum members,

VEHICLE: I have a 2008 Chev Truck, Reg Cab, purchased on Oct 2008 at Reliable Chev Richardson, TX.

USAGE: It is parked in a garage every night and many days I never leave the house. It has only been in the rain a handful of times. I am retired and put little mileage on the truck (17,300 now).

PROBLEM: My driver side door lock quit working again.

HISTORY: The passenger side lock-actuator failed in Mar 2011 and the mileage was 8,400. It was under warranty and the dealer replaced the door latching mechanism, Lock-actuator (a ~$100 part).

OPPS-CORRECTION Mar 1, 2013: The first failure was the passenger side door.

PRESENT SYMPTOMS:

-When I push "Unlock" on the door switch only the passenger door unlocks.

- When I push "Unlock" the first time on the keyfob, I hear the relay (near the driver's left foot) click, but no clack of solenoid-actuator and the driver's door does NOT unlock. If push it a second time the passenger door does unlock.

[Thank you to the guys who mentioned where the door relay was and suggested using the keyfob to isolate the driver door from the passenger door for diagnostics.]

ATTITUDE: Yes, I'm disappointed too with this recurrance, but I hope you can help me get this fixed.

Welcome to the forum...
I have not had one fail so I can't speak to personal experience, however I would offer up the idea of removing the door panel and checking for binding or wire ware... IF replacement is needed you may be able to install and after market solenoid that are relativity inexpensive via EBay or Amazon... they are all 12v and most are universal fit...

yep, here is the scenario, they ask for the VIN, then they ask for your case number, then oh so sorry, your plastic handles have broke and your door actuators will eventually break and you will either pay us $270 each or we can give you the run around
