Just got an '09 Suburban - looking for some advice
Hey Guys,
Great forum. I've been reading it for the past few weeks and there is a lot of great info here!
We just bought an '09 Suburban for our growing family......I've never owned a GM or Chevy before, but with 6 kids, it is one of the few vehicles that fits us and actually has some cargo room too. It's pretty bad when even a Suburban is a tight fit....lol.
We bought a used '09 but it does not have two options which are important for us. First is a DVD player for the kids, and second is the back up camera. We want to get these installed but don't know where to start. The truck does not have Nav (which I don't need anyway). I know you might ask why we bought a vehicle without two options we wanted, and the answer is pretty simple: price and selection available.
I would like to get an idea of how much this should cost to buy the parts and have installed. I know I could probably figure it out to do it myself, but there is zero chance the wife is going to let me tear up our new vehicle......so I will have to get a "professional" to do it.
What is a reasonable cost to have these two things installed and should I go with OEM stuff or other brands? Getting an understanding of how much labor cost should be is key, as I know total cost will depend on the parts cost.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Oh, and if you need any more details, just ask......

Welcome to the forum.
With six kids, you might want to consider getting headrest DVD players.
There are wireless backup cameras available w/ standalone screens so not having a Nav shouldn't hurt.

Congrats. I just bought a 09 a couple of weeks ago. Like you when you looking in a certain price range you may not get everything you want. Mine came with leather but the seats are not heated. I didn't even know that was an option. However it has remote start so you can get it heated up before you ever get it in it. My old suburban had heated leather but the drivers side quite working years ago anyway. Mine came with the DVD set-up which is nice. But I found a couple other small problems with the truck which I have already got taken care of.
Do you want the DVD built in. You may have to go with an aftermarket system to achieve this but I am not 100% sure. Check crutchfield and ebay.
I agree a back up camera would be handy especially when hooking to my trailer. I wish Garmin would come out with a Nuvi with an integrated back-up camera. I don't want anymore screens on my dash because I already have the Garmin on there.
