Default Oil Filter PF42 or PF48?

So I was going thru my invoices today and I came across something interesting. On a few of my oil changes the dealerused GM#89017524(PF48) and on others GM#88984215(PF42).

Is this something I should be concerned about?

I would like to see some consistency as they are the dealership. I have the PF42 on now and have been running Mobile1 since 800 miles(GM#12345885).

Whats the major difference in the filters. Apparently they both fit, Im thinking maybe the length?

TIA

The AC Delco PF48 supercedes the PF42 so no harm no foul.

While on the topic, is there a technical reason why the filters are smaller today than they used to be? Better media ??

Many reasons:
More efficient filter media is one, less waste (greener) is another and then the smaller capacity filter takes less time to fill with oil on initial start-up after oil/filter change so oil reaches top of engine a nano-second quicker, the smaller size also makes the filter less likely to be damaged (smaller target) by road debris.

Still have to fight that manly urge to need a huge filter, as if its bigger it must be better right...lol

Well yeah. That's why I use the 350 truck filter (PF35) on my '73.
