hockeytrk, I had the exact same problem with 2013 Burban. I found that the switch in the lift handle had failed in the closed position, not allowing either it or the close button to work. I removed the interior panels on the rear hatch and found that the two switches on the lift gate itself are tied together, if one fails the other is inoperable. I unplugged the switch on the liftgate handle and the close button works now. I ordered a new switch from www.gmpartscenter.net, part#15106857 for $13.00. Hope this helps.

I did not know it could fail in that position! When I first saw my truck on the lot (used) the back hatch could only be opened via the fob or inside button. They then found that the switch in the handle was bad and replaced it.

Must get water in there and mess it up somehow..

Are you able to share where you found instructions to replace the release switch? I'm not really mechanically inclined but follow instructions pretty good and have changed a few parts on my own by following instructions...

Just posted this in another thread, but inside that handle in the back is a touchpad switch of some sort. Mine was replaced prior to purchase used from the dealer. I think it might be a capacitive switch but I am not sure.

I too had the same issue. Key fob works, inside button works, outside can't open the liftgate. They fixed that, and it has worked fine ever since.

BTW, mine also won't latch if I manually close the door. I can hear it trying to latch, but it doesn't. Like everyone else, works fine with the key fob and overhead console button.
I have exact same thing. As you mentioned you can not manually close the door if you open it with fob or console switch it just keep making noise door looks shut but does not latch. You must lift it fully open then use fob or console switch to latch

thank you from five years after your post! I have been trying to sort out why my liftfate wouldn’t open with the key fob any more and didn’t know about the overhead switch!

Duh..as in I didn’t even check that! I don’t know who turned mine off. I just almost broke the new lift gate glass button switch I just replaced.
