Default Fuel Issue?

Hi,
Brand new here and in need of help. We got my wife a 2003 tracker, 4WD, 2L 6, about a year ago. Just recently it didn't want to start but I let it sit for a few and it started fine. I didn't think any more about it.

She took the car to help a friend at the doctors. It stopped twice on the way there, then started and ran both times They got to the Doctors and on the way to his house it quit and now she's stuck. They had it towed to his place. He is an ASC certified mechanic (although semi-disabled) so he knows how to trouble shoot and is changing the filter and scanned the electronics and found a bunch of "issues". Plans to change the MAP sensor first. He says it absolutely feels like no fuel.

I may have done it though! The only thing different is that I pressure washed the engine and compartment. Then i brought the car home and the next time I started it is when it wouldn't start . The next day she took it and now they're stuck.

I did look for vacuum hoses after I washed it and didn't see any loose hoses, and he says he thinks it was running too smooth (when it ran) to be a vacuum leak.

Any Ideas what it might be?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

John

Can you post the OBD codes for us to go over? Engine not getting enough fuel can be many things besides the fuel pump. What kind of fuel are you using? The cheap stuff can cause issues, particularly in older motors with the poppet valve fuel injection spider assembly systems. This can sometimes be remedied buy a bottle Of Chevron Techron Complete or Seafoam gasoline additive if they are not too far gone. Let us know about the OBD codes, and we can probably help you.

Default More info

Thank you,
I don't know how long it's been saving them but he gets these
P0174 (1 of 6) Fuel Trim System Severe
P0102 (2 of 6) Mass Air Flow Low Voltage
P0171 (4 of 6) Pending
P0174 Duplicate but not marked severe
and P0751 (6 of 6) Shift Solinoid

Rough and low RPM idle - 1200RPM rough and car shakes

Ideas? His first thought yesterday was to replace the MAP but that is seriously expensive and I'd hate to do that and have it not work.

Thanks,
John

As olicanhenry posted, I 'd not think this is a map/maf issue, but lack of fuel issue. Pursue the fuel pressure, and I know you posted replaced the filter, but go from there with fuel pressure check.

We checked everything out from the tank up and have 40 pounds of pressure. Cleared the codes after checking pressure and re-ran when it still surged and the only think that came up was 0102 for the MAF.
Any ideas?

Thanks all for the help. Turns out it was the MAF sensor that failed. All good after replacement.

Are you sure the MAF was not just in need of cleaning? It is really easy to do. I'd make sure you put some permatex dieclectrical grease in the connection to make sure it never happens again. It's cheap and effective insurance.
