The J20 PCM ignores most of the engine sensors during cranking but it does look for the "engine start signal."

The ignition switch sends a 12-volt signal to the PCM connector C2 pin 18 during engine cranking.

You can check for that signal by back-probing the PCM connector. (2001 J20 engine shown)

I have no access to a 2.0L engine. Hopefully a J20 owner can answer this question definitively but until then see if this helps:

i tested the camshaft position sensor and got 105.8 on the multimeter with the ohms set to the 200k setting can someone tell me if this is within range? I still have not been able to locate the plug for the crankshaft position sensor.

Again, I have no access to a J20 engine but...

I found this J20 component locator in the Chevy service manual.

From this picture it looks like the CKP connector is inches above the starter motor.

Further research indicates the CKP plug is below the intake manifold as shown in the earlier photo.
Also, the CKP resistance should be around 570Ω. If the scanner is not showing a P0335 DTC,
the CKP is probably good.

The more I learn the more it seems the engine does not require a CKP signal to run.

I was stunned to read the transmission has to be removed to change the CKP sensor in a J20 engine. Ouch!

Excellent!
I have so many questions.
Can you post a picture of the old crank sensor?
Was its resistance out of tolerance?
Did you have to remove the transmission to replace it?
What made you suspect the coils?
Do you think this trouble was related to a water puddle?

If posting a picture of the old sensor is not possible, could you post the part number of the new sensor?
