I had a similar issue on my 1999 Tracker. I came across some documentation that suggested a bad camshaft position sensor (CPS) could be one of the causes. I had already tried everything else on the list so I replaced the CPS...and the problem went away.

The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor trouble code is P0340

The part will cost you between 200 and 370 US dollars

It will cost you between 90 and 100 US dollars to reset the timing.

Or you can do it yourself if you have the equipment.

You'll need a Tracker specific scanner.

A generic scanner will not have this function.

With the spark advance locked at 5°, connect a timing light.

Mark the crankshaft pulley notch with paint or chalk.

Rotate the body of the CMP sensor until the pulley notch is half-way between the two major timing marks.
