Tracker 101: intro to dome lights
In a 2001 5-door Tracker the two dome lights and the map lights in the rearview mirror get battery voltage from the DRL module.
Pin 12 supplies 12 volts to all four bulbs. The map lights have a hard ground. Their operation is mainly controlled by the switches in the mirror. When the front dome light switch is in the "door"
position the two dome lights are in parallel. Whatever happens to one happens to the other. The dome lights get their initial ground from the five door jamb switches. The switches are normally
open. When any door opens the corresponding switch closes providing a path from ground to dome bulbs and the bulbs illuminate. The bulbs stay illuminated as long as any door is open.
After the last door closes, the DRL module holds a ground on pin 7 for 15 seconds. After 15 seconds the ground is removed and the dome lights extinguish. However, if pin 9 of the DRL module
sees the key turn to "ON" or "START" any time during the 15-second interval, it will drop the ground immediately. If the dome lights to not extinguish when you start your car, you have a door ajar. In the event any door stays open for 15 minutes, the DRL module looks for a key in the ignition (pin 10). If the key is present the DRL will continue to supply 12 volts to the dome and map lights
until the battery goes dead. If no key is present, at the 15 minute mark the DRL module removes the 12-volt supply voltage to the dome and map lights and they extinguish.
