1968 Corvette Wants to Take You On a Retro Safari

1968 Corvette

Safari Yellow ‘Vette comes with two engines and a ton of old-school fun.

The late ’60s were a bit of a bittersweet time for the American automotive scene. For the most part, it ushered in the end of an era for muscle car performance. Only a few years later, things got very dark as horsepower numbers nosedived in lieu of mpg’s. For those who love the styling of the C3 Corvette, it also limits the desirable model years to 1968-1972.

So in recent years, these Corvettes have only grown in popularity (and price). But for anyone looking to grab an early C3, this Safari Yellow 1968 Corvette is a great example. We spotted the vintage ‘Vette in the Hemmings classifieds, where it’s being advertised ahead of the 2017 Carlisle Spring Auction, which takes place between April 20 and 22.

Aside from that period perfect color choice, there are several reasons to covet this Corvette. It’s an original L-79 car, which means it had the high compression 327/350hp V8. That engine comes with the car, but isn’t current in the engine bay. Someone along the line replaced it with a rebuilt 350. But the Muncie 4-speed manual transmission still remains, as does the Positraction rear end.

There’s also a set of awesome side pipes that were such a popular add on back in the ’60s and ’70s. Overall, this older restoration is a pretty sweet package that’s in solid shape. And it would represent a nice get for anyone looking for a little retro fun in a vintage ‘Vette.
