Having once been a U.S. Army Staff Car, ’56 Chevy 150 sold for $70K at Barrett-Jackson to raise funds for Honor Flight Network.

When one thinks of Chevys in the U.S. military, it’s usually the trucks that come to mind. The CUCV, CUCV II and LSSV all held it down on the base from the early Eighties into the turn of the new millennium. Most were used to haul staff and cargo around, though a few were tapped for ambulance duty to whisk soldiers from the front line to the M.A.S.H. unit.

However, a few Chevy cars also enlisted into the military. Such is the case with this 1956 150 staff car. On Friday, June 18, it made its auction debut at Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas 2021, all for a good cause in the name of our veterans.

In August 1956, the Chevy landed at Sioux Army Depot in Sidney, Nebraska. Until its tour of duty ended in 1964, the four-door ferried staff all over the base. Then, it retired to a nearby farm, only for the chickens to call it home. The barn find worked its way through two more owners, leading to this moment in the Vegas sun.

Under the hood, a 216 inline-six and three-speed manual carries the Chevy through its daily duties, something that hadn’t happened since 1965. Meanwhile, the interior received a near-total restoration, mainly to make up for the chickens scratching everything up. Some of that history remains on the garnish mouldings, though.

The restoration also brought back all of the important markings needed when maneuvering around an ammo depot, as well as the usually military identifiers. And of course, rather than olive green, this Chevy wears beige, like the brass it once carried.

As for its re-enlistment, it’s for a good cause: Honor Flight Network. All proceeds from the no-reserve bidding will help the non-profit continue its mission of flying veterans to Washington, D.C. for one more tour of honor, all at no cost to the veterans.

It’s not often one gets a chance to own a Chevy that once served our country. Especially one going on a tour of honor of its own, all to help those who served alongside it.
