Rare Chevy Suburban Dually Hits Auction Block Looking Good as New

This amazing Chevy Suburban dually is so rare that most people probably don’t even know such a thing exists.

We’ve seen our fair share of strange and quirky vehicles in our time, because, well, there are a lot of them out there in the world. But the Chevy Surburban dually is something that most people may not even know existed, and it’s a truly strange yet also awesome footnote in automotive history. Like many weird rides that have come along over the years, the Chevy Suburban dually wasn’t built by GM, but rather, an aftermarket outfit, but that doesn’t make this 1986 example – which is up for grabs at Mecum’s upcoming Glendale, Arizona auction – any less cool.

To build this type of machine, one started with a 3/4-ton – not a one-ton dually – and then added a dual rear wheel axle and those signature fat fenders. And truthfully, the conversion looks pretty awesome, particularly from the rear, where we also get a good look at those signature barn doors that swing open wide, welcoming massive amounts of cargo into its spacious abode. It’s certainly not the type of thing you see every day, even if there are a small handful of Suburban duallys of multiple generations out there.

With just 42k miles on the clock, this old ‘burb is certainly in fantastic condition, with its two-tone paint glistening in the sun, along with the perfect chrome trim. We’re also digging the original hub caps, towing mirrors, and rooftop lighting, all of which perfectly accentuate the fact that this big SUV was built to pull heavy loads. It shouldn’t have a problem doing just that either because this rig is powered by GM’s 454 cubic-inch big block, which is mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission with 4.10 gears out back and an HD towing package.

Inside, the driver and passenger enjoy quite a bit of comfort and more room than most modern vehicles provide, with amenities including power windows and locks. There is a crack in the dash, but otherwise, flaws are difficult to find. The only real downside to this amazing machine is the fact that it’s going to drink gas heavily, but since you’ve got a massive 40-gallon tank underneath, that will at least keep you going in between rest stops.

At the end of the day, this giant Suburban dually provides us with something that doesn’t really exist today, nor would it ever have, if not for a small handful of builders with creative vision. And even if something like this isn’t necessary or even that practical for some folks, that doesn’t make us want it any less.
