Default How do I fix rusty frame

Not sure if I'm on the correct thread. I just picked up 2000 sierra 2500 4x4 with 104,000 miles on it. the truck itself is beautiful. still got the clear coat in the bed and the original cab corners and rockers. My problem is the control arm mounts and the front of the frame on the passenger side. I've already located a donor with no rust and was going to replace the brackets with good ones from the donor. Not really sure what to do here. The truck is in immaculate condition other than the suspension mounting points. I've had a few of these trucks but never ran into this. just looking for some advice.

A few feet back ,under the front door, on the frame, there is a factory weld. Its were the channel part of the frame joins the tube front part of the frame. Grind that weld and replace the front frame clip. Big job, but do-able. and all the like for like parts are the same.

Thanks for the info, I hope I don't have to do it like that. I really hope I can find an alternative to pulling the motor and whole front end off the truck. I just moved back to Maine. I don't have a shop anymore and I'm doing this in the front yard.

I would agree, I'll bet the entire frame is compromised, or will be sooner than later - sorry

actually strangely enough. it's only the parts in the pics. that's why I'm confused about it. the rest of the truck frame included has no rust on it at all

The rest of the frame may look good, but rust damage like that doesn’t remain isolated to one area.

Get an inspection camera and get a good look at the inside of the frame where you can before deciding how to repair it. I’d be very surprised if that frame is in good enough condition to weld on.

I'll make sure I check it out. If it was you what would you do? The truck itself is cherry. But I can't get what I got in it out of it if it needs a frame.

If it’s just the front end of the frame that needs work/replacement, I’d make the repair. But I’m a mechanic with a background in heavy duty welding and less intimidated by such a repair.

I’m also patient, so I’d be taking my time to work through it a little each day/week, and probably address other issues as I go.

But that’s wholly dependent on the rest of the frame being in good condition. If it’s not, I’d either try to sell it for what I could or part it out and recoup as much as possible.
