I have a 1987 El Camino with a 4.3 V-6. When I shut off the key the vehicle continues to run without missing a beat. It's not dieseling it just continues to run as if I never turned it off. PLEASE HELP ! ! ! I have tried everything.

 

Could be the switch, however there is a small rod that runs from the key to the switch in the steering column, if it starts, it cannot be an issue with that other than not moving far enough back when you turn the key to off. My guess is ignition switch, not the key cylinder.

 

i tried unplugging the ignition switch down on the column and it still acts the same. does that mean the switch is good. Also when i put a test light down on the fuse block on the ignition slots it goes on and off with the key. any help will be greatly appreciated....

 

also the ignition connections on the fuse block stay hot with the key off until i kill the engine and then they are not hot.

 

Has there been any aftermarket stuff done it before this problem occured?

 

Is there an ignition relay in there? If so, the contacts could be welded together, and no matter if you shut the power off to the coil it will stay running.

 

no aftermarket stuff it is completely stock. someone told me they think its backfeeding power.

What I would suggest, locate the wire to the distributor, trace it back. Could be it is tied into +12 volt wire due to insulation rub, heat.
