I've run that, or something similar, but I'm still inundated with the crap and ads. Rooting gets rid of all of it, leaving just the Android and whatever I see fit to have. I could probably do it myself, but my son-in-law does IT for a living, and it'll be easier for him than I.

That may be harder than I thought, from Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELM327

Would have to use this app to identify: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...entifier&hl=en

OK guys after researching these OBDII scanners, and ELM's website this afternoon, I'm thinking most if not all, in the $5-$15 range are incomplete knock-offs. I did find 2 companies (foreign) that basically guarantee their chips and boards are to ELM's specs.

1. totalcardisgnostics.com (Australia) ELM327 Bluetooth Auto Diagnostic Scanner: OBD Scan Tool for OBD2, OBDII Cars, Vans, Trucks
$37.00 plus tax and shipping

2. elm-327.eu (Romania) ELM-327.EU - Genuine ELM327 2.2 OBDII Interfaces
$57.92 plus tax and shipping

I'm curious, will anyone who buys a scanner please check it with the identifier app https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...entifier&hl=en, and see if it is the actual claimed version. And those who already own one, please check it also, and let us know, thank you.

Well that was a bust. I downloaded that app, went out to the van, and while it lit up, the phone didn't see it.

That ID app. But all is well. I had to make the phone forget the ELM and start over. I'm not sure what the app said, as in I'm not sure what to look for. And as soon as I shut the van off, the screen cleared.

Hey Stan, check back with the identifier website https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...entifier&hl=en, you'll see the instructions and some examples, maybe take a screenshot of your results on your phone, then email that to yourself, then you can post it here, I think. I didn't think the van needs to be running, just key on, could be wrong though, thanks for your help.
