ok found an answer. pcm does control starter.gm shop manager said computer senses fuel in intake, can continue to crank up to 9 seconds. fctory program to prevent backfire causing plastic imtake to break. then he said try to convince a customer on the service drive of that. seems to be comon in several modles/years. said cleaning throtle body and adding injector cleaner can help. was this b.s. ANY IDEAS??

Are you describing a starter pinion to flywheel clash or a condition when you release the key the starter cranks by itself but no clash occurs?

does the gear clash occur once briefly after start-up or randomly while the car is running?
the starter could be hanging up. The electrical portion of the ignition switch could be could be bad.

more like turn key to crank and engine starts. release key to run position, sounds like starter motor is still cranking 1/2 -3 seconds. very intermitent, sometimes will do it several times in a row. dosen't seem to have anything to do with engine or air temp. most of the time it won't do it. no grind or whir noise. ignition switch always springs back. replaced lock cylinder thoght it could be draging. these cyls. are prone to eating keys and self destructing. thought that fixed it. don't think it's in the switch. will see the car later today.

the start request is ecm controlled so even if you hold the key in start after it starts it shouldn't grind. A mechanical key cylinder problem will not cause this as you have found out.

a starter pinion that is slow to disengage or has clearance problems usually make a ringing noise.
