My Suburban only has 400 miles on her. What should I do my first oil change at, 1000 miles or 3000 miles?

 

If you plan to keep it until the wheels fall off then do the first LOF between 1k and 2k miles.
otherwise just follow the engine oil life monitor.

 

Thanks, I'll stick with the 1st service at 1K...

 

Can I ask why the 1st service is important b/t 1k and 2k? Is the 1st service just an oil change? I scheduled a rush appt b/c im at 1930 mi. and wanted to make sure I did things correctly, any insight would be appreciated.

I did mine at 500 miles the first time as I had a free service where I bought it 100 miles away from my home and did not plan on ever going back. The reason to change the oil and filter early is that any small metal particles from manufacturing will hopefully be drained out early. All new engines no matter who builds them will have some debris/metal inside the engine that the eye can not see. I used to build/race small block Chevy engines in my younger days and we would build the engine, run the engine briefly and then change the oil and then again after a couple of hard runs. Never ever blew an engine and these babies were cranking around 10,000 rpm..

 

New motors shed metallic particles internally as the engine is run and wears-in, your oil filter is not 100% effective allowing some of the particles to remain suspended in the oil doing nothing good.
New motors also suffer from excessive blow-bye due to the rings and valves not being worn-in and fully seated, these gases contain harmful acids which contaminate the oil reducing its ability to properly lubricate.

 

On my 07 Tahoe I changed oil/filter at 1K, 3K and again at 5K. Now running M1 5W30 and I change it every 6K or so which is at about 60% used up according to the oil life monitor. I do some towing each month; if not for that I might go to 7K or more. Still cannot get used to the oil life monitor indicating I can go 9,500 miles between changes. Towing in 3rd pulls the number down faster but I could probabaly tow nonstop and it would still say 5,000 miles.

At the 1K and 3K changes, the oil looked equally dirty. I think the early change is a must on any new engine, somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 miles.

Now at 15,000 and running great (except for the MPG but that's another story!).

well, i just had the oil changed...mileage was at 1952 mi....was it worth it? i see people changing the oil at 500 /1000/1500....did I miss my opportunity?

stupid *** service lady was like "unless your oil life indicator is at a low percentage, you are just wasting your money" kept telling me it wasnt necessary....................

I basically had to tell her 3x to just do the oil change, that I didnt care about the oil life indicator...
