Default 2001 Suburban - A/C Compressor Clutch Replacement

Did a complete R&R on the a/c system about a month ago, with a reman'd Denso compressor. Unfortunately after about 2 weeks the clutch decided to burn up on a 400 mile trip.

So, instead of having the compressor replaced under warranty, and being on the hook for another $160 freon refill, I'd like to just replace the clutch. However, I was told by a buddy that it was necessary to depressurize the system when removing the clutch, as it would cause the front seal to blow out? Is this correct?

If I have to depressurize it, then I'll just replace the whole compressor under warranty.
