I doubt that listening to the radio, even overnight, would hurt a battery. I think your issue is unrelated to that.

I agree but when i came back to the car the battery icon was blinking & the car wouldn’t start. Checked the battery & it was no good but with a jump the car should start. Could it be the bcm?

It would completely drain a battery. You might get 6hrs of listening. Definitely not overnight. Deeply discharging a battery that is only meant for cranking is very bad for it. (it's not built to be discharged below about 80%). Doing that a few times will pretty much kill a cranking battery. Especially if it wasn't in great shape to begin with.

Will the vehicle start with booster cables to another vehicle?

I left headlights on for 3 full hours on March 16, 1985, and my car started right up. Of course that was a 1970 Volkswagen !!! Headlights use way more amps than a stereo.

Folks DRIVE old VWs a couple of hundred miles just on the battery when the generators go out on old VWs.

Sure. That's not surprising since a vehicle only needs 25A or so once it's running. But you need hundreds of amps to start it. More if it's freezing. Also, we are talking about a heavy Suburban with a big V8 engine. Not a little VW. It takes a lot more power to start and run.

An average stereo will use between 5 and 10 Amps. A halogen lamp that fits a 1970 Beetle, such as Sylvania H6024 draws 3.3A

A group 48 starting battery will have around 70Ah of capacity (brand new, fully charged). That means @ 7A draw, the battery will be flat after about 10h. Of course, the stereo will stop working long before that. The vehicle will also be un-startable before that. You will start to struggle with cranking below a battery volage of about 11V (esp in winter). Of course, you don't want to discharge a starting battery below 75-80% since the lead plates inside will start to disintegrate and short out.

I would give it 4 to 6 hrs of stereo time before you can't start. If his daughter was using lights, chargers, seat warmers etc or left a fan running, then it would be even less.
