Default Transmission questions

Looking to install a transmission cooler in my 2005 Tahoe. The parts from gmpartsdirect are about $110. Not sure what the inlet pipe and the out let pipe are or the "retainer". Are the pipes a direct connection to the transmission lines at the radiator? Is everything I need included? How much work to install. Is this job best left to the professional? Lastly, is the pan easy to drop on the transmission to change the fluid. Thanks in advance.

As in2pro said, put it in series w/ the existing cooler. Don't want it to get too cold in the winter.

Thanks for the information. Has anyone used a factory cooler with the metal lines. Was wondering where it was installed and the difficulty of the install. Thanks again. Tom

I would bet the factory cooler will mount in a similar fashion of being in series with the lines that run to the radiator... from what I have seen looking behind the grill there appears to be clips available for the cooler lines to be installed to.

installing a factory aux. cooler with the factory lines is not hard at all. however that is comming from some one who has worked in a trans shop for 10 years. and had a hoist! the retainer you talked about is just a small steel clip for the push in quick connect lines. hayden makes a good cooler. 1405 i believe is one of their biggest. this will include some rubber hose and some push through ties to mount it to the condesor. to properly install that, you wil have to cut the top cooler line( using a tubing cutter for straigh cut) at the rad. about 3 inches from the end, leaving you room for the hose to slid over it. you must cut this so that you can still use the quick connect fitting in the radiator. now that you have cut the top line, YOU MUST FLARE THE ENDS OF THE COOLER LINE THAT YOU WISH TO SLIP THE HOSE OVER! if you do not, this will cause the line to blow off and smoke your trans!! do not use 2 or 3 hose clamps and think you will be ok, you will not! any 3/8 double flaring tool will work. i even do just the first step of the double flare for ease of installing the hose, all you need is some sort of lip for the hose clamp to catch. the rest is just commen sence and personal pref. route the hoses in a safe area away from chaffing, pinching, or crimping. note.. install the hose on the cooler before you attach the cooler to the condensor, the hoses are a very tight fit and it is near impossable to do so with the cooler not in your hands or on a bench. good luck
