Badass Muddy Trucker: Sweet ’79 Chevy Stepside is Looking for Fun

1979 Chevy Stepside Pickup

After staying in the same family its entire life, this Chevy square body is up for sale at a very reasonable price.

To us, there’s nothing on this planet cooler than an old Chevy square-body truck. And we certainly aren’t the only ones with that sentiment. Chevy trucks built from the early ’70s to the later ’80s are still some of the most coveted vehicles around. And oftentimes, you can still find a good deal on one. At least, that certainly seems to be the case with this classic 1979 Chevy Stepside 4×4 that’s currently for sale in the Chevrolet Forum Marketplace.

But the most amazing thing about this pickup is the fact that it’s remained in the same family its entire life. The current owner’s father, who worked for General Motors, purchased the truck new and used it as his daily driver for 30 years. His son eventually took possession of the box Chevy and began to fix it up with the intentions of using it as his winter driver.

During that process, he spent a reported $4,000 on parts. Much of the interior is new, including the door panels, dash, and steering wheel. The seller also replaced the fenders and hood, gas tanks, grille and headlights, and mirrors. Mechanically, the old Chevy sports a new Holley carb, distributor, power steering pump, heater unit, and blower fan. The icing on the cake is a set of new 33″ Super Swamper tires. They obviously help make this old truck look killer. Not to mention a heck of a lot of fun off-road.

Even today, the Stepside gets driven regularly around the seller’s large slice of land. It reportedly runs and drives great, and the four-wheel drive works perfectly. The only thing the truck needs is a new speedometer, which is no big deal. The seller also notes that the new fenders and hood need paint. But we’re digging the way it looks as is.

The seller clearly hates to part ways with his father’s old Chevy, and we can’t blame him there. But if you’re in the market for a fun and reliable toy for just $3,000, this seems like a great opportunity. Personally, we’d fix the speedo on this Stepside and just drive it the way it sits. And of course, that includes hitting some muddy terrain at least once a week!
