Default advice on onstar and truck internet service

I just got a new truck. You get 1 month of mychev app with onstar and intenret. I was going to extend the onstar, but them they told me it does not extend the internet in the car. that sucks cause its like 40+ monthly for onstar and internet. I don't get the internet and how to just get the internet.

Has anyone just used their phone? Does it work well and do I really need the internet with the truck itself. I think I read that in order for the hotspot to work in the truck you need the truck internet and it cant just route from the phone to the truck and braodcast internet. sucks though. But I want to know if I use like android auto or whatever I can still use alexa and maps and all the toys I have on the display

any insight from anyone would be appreciated

new truck have internet for the use of alexa and google maps. Onstar service, for another 15$ a month CAD, you get a data plan. My data plan has now run out. I was able to connect my hot spot of my phone to the truck and use navigation, alexa and google. So that's cool. If you have a data plan with your phone I just think things are getting expensive getting another data plan for your truck. Unless you travel all the time long rides.

The only inconvenience to date is that I have to turn on my hot spot everytime for my phone, and wait for the truck to connect to it, or fortce it to connect.

You don't need hot spots

(Alexa is for Amazon devices by the way)

thanks for sharing this. I didn't see anything about Wi-Fi sharing. You are saying when android auto is on it'll automatically use it was it's internet and allow the vehicles's Wi-Fi to broadcast so others can connect to the truck?

you're basically using your phone through the vehicle's display.
If your vehicle has Android Auto,† it lets you use some of your favorite smartphone features through your vehicle’s infotainment system:†
  • Make/receive calls
  • Use Google Maps™
  • Stream YouTube music
  • Use Google Assistant™†
  • And more

Ya I can see you can use your music and maybe google maps will work through your phone data and show it on the truck. However when I plug into android auto Alexa and google on the truck keep saying they are offline. I wanted to know if android auto will provide the internet and that you can even use the vehicle wifi hot spot.

I do not think that this is the case. In order for me to get it all working, I have to plugin android auto and hotspot from my phone to connect the vehicle to internet and then all is working. A little inconvenient but better than paying two data plans.

Again, there's no Alexa. That's an Amazon thing. Don't use the truck's assistant. Use what's on the phone.

vehicle hot spot is only available if you buy onstar. There's no point if your phone has internet
