Default 2006 Savana Shifting out of park issue

I have a 2006 Savana 3500 and been having intermitent issues where I can't shift out of park, or have to press the brake pedal very hard. Now it will not shift out of park.

Replaced the brake switch and same thing. If I install the brake switch upside down from how it was installed initially -- I have it installed horizontal now with plug facing up and it works fine.

Brake lights on the van work when brake switch is installed with plug facing down or up, but it won't shift out of park with the plug facing down.
Which way around is the switch supposed to be?

Thanks. Weird how it only works upside down then. I have ordered a new brake light switch from Rock Auto. Maybe the one from the local parts store is just crap. Will update when I install the new(again) part.

I got a new brake switch part from Rock Auto (Standard brand Part #SLS303) and it still only works upside down - plug facing up. Any ideas on why it only works this way?
The push rod looks normal and undamaged.

Thanks

I got some pictures and now when I put it in the correct way (wires down), it now works. I could not get it to work wires down last week -- strange.
The first pic WAS the only way it would work. Now when changed it to take pics it suddently works with the wires facing down.

This was only way it would work

Did not work...But now it does...strange

check to make sure you don't have any broken wires in the pigtail

Now it is back to having to press the brake pedal VERY hard before it kicks of the release.

Also just noticed that if I have the ignition key turned 1 click I can shift out of park without touching the brake. I am assuming that is not normal

I will look at the wires for damage. And I'll try pressing the brake by hand and press on/wiggle the wires to see if there is a break. I can hear the lockout solenoid click/release under the steering wheel.
