2000 Impala A/C Not Working
Hi,
I am new here and I think you guys are doing a great job!
My a/c is not working, why?
I checked all fuses and relays, but the compressor does not engage!
Any help would be great!
Thanx

it could be the clutch in your conpresor. it works like the clutch in your car. when its not needed it freewheels when you turn it on it starts turning the compresor. i would take it and get it cheaked at a shop just so your not braking any seals on the system if you dont have to. hope this helps a bit anyway.

I am a bit familiar with the way it works, but I was wondering if there is anything else I could check as to why it doesn't engage before I take it to the mechanic who most probably is going to tell me right away that the compresor needs to be replaced.

was it making any noise that you heard before it quite working maby a baring went bad? i think though it sounds like a trip tp get a new conpreser. iv never tryed to take one apart before so i dont know if you could rebuild one or not.

It could be something as simple as a low refrigerant charge. Don't assume the worst case. AC systems will leak their charge over a period of time and that is why they are re-charged occasionally. If you are low on refrigerant, a technician should do a leak check on the system.

An A/C compressor that is running but not pumping refrigerant is starving itself of oil. The refrigerant carries the oil with it. To protect the compressor, the system probably uses a pressure switch to keep the compressor from running if the refrigerant charge is low.
