Default 01 Suburban - keep it ?

Hi Gang,

I just realized I was supposed to post my question in this forum not the new members one, so here it is:

We are owners of a Chevy Suburban and Tahoe and we really love both of them. Our 01 Suburban has 150k miles and under other circumstances i would have sold it and bought another one. But we just bought our son a car and cash is a little tight, so I would like to keep the Suburban another few years.

I heard these are 200k+ mileage cars, so will we make it ? Should be expect to have to replace the tranny and engine ?

If so, any idea what these might cost ?

Thanks.

Give us a little more information, will you be doing the work or having a shop do it, new or rebuilt parts? These questions will have a huge impact on the cost.

MM, thanks for the response, I am going to let Chevy do the work. I am guessing if I need a engine or tranny I will get a rebuild. Do you the cost of these for new vs. rebuild ?

Also, should I be thinking about a timing chain replacement ? When ?

Thanks.

My guess would be about $8,000. for a rebuilt trans and motor installed by the dealer. I wouldn't think with the current miles on the motor that you will need to change the timing chain, the trans it's self is about $3,000.

MM, thanks for the info. that is the neighborhood I thought the cost would be.

Should the timing belt go to 250k ?

Thanks.

Im not sure how much the engine itself changed if any from my 99 tahoe to your 01 but I drove mine hard just about everyday and even cross country. My tahoe has 215,000 on it and I am just now replacing the gaskets and seals (main reason for this is a bad intake manifold gasket) I also recently relaced the starter (super easy to do yourself).

Honestly in my opinion, your 01 is definately worth keeping as I believe it has alot of life left in her. Also remember it will also depend what will need to be done by how consistant the maintanence was.

hope this helps

215?! slackers. my 1995 had 280,000 when I sold it! and I wish I hadn't! Everything worked 100% except the A/C... never left me anywhere in 14 years!
