GM Trucks and SUVs Peeling Paint Lawsuit

Some owners of select 2015-2019 GM trucks and SUVs are fed up with a number of paint quality problems.

Peeling paint has long been an issue in the automotive industry for a number of models over the years, and it’s a truly frustrating one, as many are already well aware. We expect the paint jobs on our new vehicles to last for a long time, especially if we take care of them, but that just isn’t always the case. It certainly isn’t for a number of owners of GM trucks and SUVs, at least, who recently filed a lawsuit against the automaker alleging that their vehicles were sprayed with defective paint and clear coat, according to Car Complaints.

The lawsuit – Riley, et al., vs. General Motors LLC – was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida and pertains to a number of GM trucks and SUVs including the 2015-2019 Chevy Tahoe, Suburban, and Silverado, as well as the 2015-2019 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, and Sierra.

The plaintiffs in the case allege that those vehicles were sprayed with paint that delaminates, bubbles, flakes, erodes, and blisters, as well as defective clear coat, and also claims that GM knew about these issues or at least should have been aware of them, but continued to sell the vehicles without addressing them. The plaintiffs argue that a recall should be issued pertaining to the peeling paint problem, which can lead to diminished value even if fixed due to an inconsistent finish.

“The coups de gras, which was the final straw is when the topcoat on the hood and top of Tahoe started to fade/grey and crack on the black undercoat,” said the owner of a 2015 Tahoe. “To fix the topcoat, the dealership wanted $2,300; of which they were going to pick up 10% of after my pushing for warranty. The Tahoe is 3 years old. The paint should last well into a decade, and I kept the car washed weekly and detailed every 6 months.”

“The paint looks awful, horrible, and an eyesore,” said another Tahoe owner. “The paint looks like it was scraped or sanded in circles and up and down. The hood and the top of the vehicle look terrible. I talked to Chuck Fairbanks, Jeff, and the manager and they want me to pay $1,900 for getting a new paint job. I have seen so many people complain about this and nothing has been done. I want my vehicle painted at no cost out of pocket to me. I love my Tahoe and it is a shame that the sides and back of the vehicle are not looking so horrible.”
