2003 Silverado 1500 ABS
Well I have problems. I will start from the beginning. Driving down the road and my ABS and brake lights in the dash came on. Brakes worked fine. Got home pulled my icarsoft cr pro scan tool in and got 2 codes. C0226 C0265. The next day started the truck up, no lights. Drove to work. On the way home the lights cam back on. Pulled the scan tool in and could not talk to the module. So the one code is replace left front speed sensor. So I bought one and changed it. Lights stay on and can not talk to it with the scan tool. I did a few things I saw on youtube. Cleaned the grounds, checked the voltage at the 2 pin connector that is connected to the ABS module. Looks good. I even bleed the lines just to make sure no air after changing a caliper a few months ago. Bad thing is it is so crusty under the truck I can't just remove the module. Torx bolts are shot. I will need to disconnect the brake lines to remove the whole unit. Any ideas before I remove the whole unit? Thanks
C0226 DOES NOT say to replace the left front wheel speed sensor nor does it say that the left front wheel speed sensor is bad. C0226 says there is a problem with the left front speed sensor's electrical circuit being either open (a broken wire) or shorted (a wire grounding out) somewhere between the LF speed sensor and the PCM.
Also, C0265 says that you have an ABS system relay circuit electrical problem with one of the wires either being open (a broken wire, unplugged connector, or a really dirty electrical connection) or a wire is grounding out.
Nothing indicates that you need to replace the ABS module.

Don't remove the unit! You'll probably damage it, it's expensive, and it's probably not the problem. You are just beginning to diagnose and it's 100% likely NOT the ABS unit.
Use OEM sensors only. Be SUPER careful. On some cars if you even bend them the wrong way on their run to the box - they won't work. "they are a balance signal pair" and any bad bend can cause signal issues. don't pull on the wires when installing. etc.
Don't replace anything until you've bench tested them and insured the part doesn't work.
1) check your battery (yes, always first before anything electrical - can cause very strange issues if bad)
2) check your major engine grounds (again - strange problems if not good grounds)
3) get a DMM digital multimeter. make sure your really getting connections
4) check dealer documents. make sure there is no special ABS reset that needs to be done using their dealer tool. it's kinda illegal: but they do it

Legal political environment has changed drastically recently, we all have seen.
The upshot here is: ABS is no longer "required"
You can disable the wheel sensors take out the light. (now: i'm speaking loosely - i'm saying you can safely disable it so it does not activate but i have no idea how to do that)
I am saying: you aren't required to dump a ton of money to fix it. ABS is not required.
Insurance companies pulled their "ABS required on all new models" manifesto because ABS was causing too many lawsuits.

Well I may have spoke too soon. When I put the GOOD used module in, with the same part number, 13354736 all the lights went out. They are still out. But when I took it for a ride today. I would have the brake on and make a complete stop. The ABS kicks in and pedal pulses. Not all the time but most of the time. Took the code reader out and plugged it in and checked for codes. None. Then I have the option to look at history. There was a code for rear speed sensor, which I don't think I have. I will crawl under and take a look. I cleared the code. I will have to take it for another test ride tomorrow. Any ideas please let me know.
Thanks
Thanks
Often times the rear wheel speed sensor is located on the rear of the transmission case (also called a Vehicle Speed Sensor VSS) if it's a 2WD. In 4WD Silverados it's generally located on the transfer case.
Good Luck!
