Default airbag recall

gm has lost their petition to stop a nhtsa airbag recall. Every other manufacturer using takata airbag has performed the recall. gm thinks they should be exempt. the concern is degraded propellant in the inflators that could deploy violently when triggered. This can occur in high humidity regions.

FYI...for folks getting junkyard parts for repairs...don't use boneyard airbags unless you can verify it has the new inflators.

think its 07 to 14 pick ups for now...it may expand. when the list is determined (probably any time now) you can call any dealership and they can find out if your vehicle is on the list by vin#.
its always a good idea to let gm know thru the dealer know your vin and contact #. If they can't contact you for a recall...its considered an orphaned vehicle and no recall letter can be sent.
I bought a used gm last month. Even though i do my own servicing...i give them my info for future recalls.

when i did the recall for fca, the new inflators had striped markings and some had a retaining bolt size change...so without a vin someone could id an updated part.

I registered my VIN with GM on their website.

My local dealer definitely knows about me because they constantly mail me offers to trade in my vehicle.

You can also log onto the NHTSA website and type in you VIN to find out if you are on the recall list. I did mine and I was not on the list, but I will check it again in a few days.

determining factor is the manufacturer and the propellant used. sodium azide is ok...ammonium nitrate bad

I have a 07 Suburban and I live in south Louisiana. It's about as hot and humid as it gets here and it hasn't failed yet it never will.
