Did you check the coil wire? Also, what year is this van?

Is spark going from the coil to the distributor?

it's a 98. It has power going to the coil.when we replaced the parts we had the number 1 spark plug wire off and cranked to see if it was shooting spark and it did, so we hooked up the wire tried to start the van but it wouldn't fire up so we sprayed starting fluid in the intake and it fired up for two seconds and it died after that we couldn't fire it up no more spark so I'm puzzled. What should I try next?

If it started with starting fluid, it has spark! Sure its not the fuel pump? You should hear it when you turn the key on. It is in the gas tank.

Does that mean you checked for spark a second time?

Have you checked the fuel pressure? Most times the fuel pump doesn't completely die, just doesn't have enough strength to start/run the van. Thus you can still hear a pump run and not be able to start the engine.

We can here the fuel pump turn on and can smell the gas, as for the spark it stopped again. when we had spark we could here a clicking sound from the distributor when we tried to start and when we distributor stopped spinning. Now that we have no spark we don't here it anymore. So i took the distributor cap off to see if i had placed the rotor backwards but you can only put it on one way.I will check tomorrow if I'm getting power to the coil and the ignitor,is that clicking sound normal?
