Default 2003 Chevy Tracker 2.5, LT upper bank catalytic converter

Hi everyone, I am not passing inspection due to the upper and lower bank catalytic converters. I am having trouble finding the correct OEM parts for this vehicle. I am not passing inspection, therefore, I cannot re-register my vehicle here in New York. Can anyone please help me with this. I purchased the O2 sensor, but have not installed it. I look forward to any and all help. Please and thank you.

If you are going to do the job yourself RockAuto has both EPA and CARB converters.

On the other hand if you are not sure if the problem is the converter or the O2 sensors (there are 4 of them on the 2.5) you may want a qualified diagnosis and there is no one more qualified than Eric O. at South Main Auto in downtown Avoca, NY. South Main Auto Repair LLC - YouTube

Default 02 sensors v catalytic converter.

thank you for responding. Is there a way that I can check to see if it’s the O2 sensors first, please? I will not be doing the work myself, as I am not experienced mechanic, nor do I have the equipment/lift.
Thank you for the recommendation.

Do you have an OBD2 scanner?
Watch Eric O. troubleshoot O2 sensors on your engine.

I recently changed the PuP catalytic converters (L&R) on my 2004 Tracker ZR2 at 116k miles. The best price I could find on a quality (Dorman) converter/manifold was $400 from Amazon. And I looked around...hard. The Dorman parts were a perfect fit and they came with new gaskets.
Its not a hard fix. Give the manifold bolts a squirt of Aerokroil or PB Blaster first. The manifold bolts are only torqued to 25 ft lbs. so they’re not tight but they just have some corrodey-bugs in there.
Good luck.

Default Upper lower sensors

[QUOTE=L84sky;471020]Do you have an OBD2 scanner?

I had a mechanic use his OBD 2 scanner and show me all of the codes that were incorrect on my car, which is making me fail inspection. There were four codes: upper/lower sensor for both right and left. (I think that’s what he called them). The other code that failed was the catalytic converter‘s upper and lower bank. Should I replace the O2 sensors first to see if the catalytic converter‘s will work. he said I am taking a risk if I change those out, and there’s no guarantee that the catalytic converter‘s would work after that. I was quoted $900 just to change out the right and left sensors. Is that the average price to replace them, (roughly), please? Thank you

are O2 sensors easily to install, without using a lift? Please and thank you

Your V6 engine has four O2 sensors: two on the driver's side (bank 1 upstream and downstream) and two on the passenger side (bank 2 upstream and downstream)
See Tracker 101: intro to the catalytic converter - Chevrolet Forum - Chevy Enthusiasts Forums

You could buy four cheap sensors at RockAuto for around $200. The sensors themselves are not hard to remove (no lift is required). But on the V6 the connectors are almost impossible to get to. They are behind the engine and there is little to no room to reach back there.

Most people have to remove the rear intake collector to get access to the O2 plugs.

Did you write down the four OBDII codes? Here are O2 codes for a 2001 V6:
P0131 02 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0132 02 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0133 02 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0134 02 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0135 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0136 02 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
P0141 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
P0151 02 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
P0152 02 Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
P0153 02 Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
P0154 02 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
P0155 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor 1)
P0156 02 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor 2)
P0161 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor 2)

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

I remember the P0420 & P0430 codes.
I don’t know the O2 sensor codes
i am purchasing the O2 sensors.
can I use 2 different brands if all 4 are not available?
this is what I’ll be purchasing.

thanks for responding

This is for my 2003 Chevy Tracker 2.5L LT model 😀

This is not good. P0420 and P430 indicate both of your PUP converters are bad. Catalytic converters don't wear out. Some engine problem (usually a misfiring cylinder) causes them to go bad. Replacing them without fixing the engine problem will just burn out the new converters. Repacing the O2 sensors now is premature.
